Hello everyone.
I'd like to ask what the phrase 'just gotta do this' implies in the following context. Lieutenant Vega is talking to Dish who has been deadly wounded in combat.

"Lieutenant Vega, report to the wardroom."
Vega looked up. "I gotta go. You okay, Dish?"
Bowles nodded. "Just gotta do this, y'know. An' hey, Vega?"
Yeah?
"If y'get th'chance, find Steph an' thank'er for me.

Does the phrase "just gotta do this" mean "I'm going to die"?

"Just gotta do this" means "it's absolutely necessary for me to do this."

Gotta is a very common colloquial way to say "I have to."

Gotta go now.
