Dr John will kick off a study to investigate the effect of a new medicine on ovarian cancer cells.

Is the use of kick off here correct?

Any suggestions?

Any more examples?

It's very informal. A kick-off begins a football match.

Dr John would probably prefer you to say that he will initiate a study....
