The past tense can be either knit or knitted.
It means to pull one's eyebrows together, causing wrinkles above the nose :-?.
It can mean that he is either angry or puzzled. When surprised, he would usually raise his brows :-o, not knit them.

Hi brend10,

Knit one’s brow

- wrinkle one's brow by frowning

frowing = showing displeasure or anger

The teacher knit his brow and looked sternly at the child.

sternly = with sternness; in a severe manner

The ticket agent knit his brow when I began to ask questions about the airline routes.

:to form wrinkles on one's brow in a facial expression that shows thought, effort, or concern

Example:
<My mother knit her brow with worry.>

Regards.
