I recognize it only as an analogy to "landing a punch." Understood the meaning, never seen that expression before.

I heard it first about three years when I worked briefly for a brand new company. I was involved with their social media so I spoke to the marketing people a few times. They talked about whether the marketing and social media posts were "landing" as desired - were they reaching enough people, the right demographic, actually encouraging people to use the company?
