[Idiom] learn the ropes

I want to use idiom "learn the ropes", but I can't right use it.
Could you say me how it can be used in the such context:
He found a job and learned the ropes of the deliveryman profession.

It means, as your example suggests, to learn the job. Use a search engine to find the origin.
