Is the following sentence acceptable?

If we adults do not successfully teach students to learn to be empathy, then our education is a failure.

No— empathy is a noun. They can't 'be empathy', any more than than they could 'be sympathy'.

 I don't think the mistake is any more than a typo. The first draft said 'teach students to learn to be empathetic', a reviewer said it would be better as ''teach students to learn empathy', and the writer was late for a meeting or something.;-)
