I point to a bookshelf full of books and say, "Give me the book.", pointing to the largest book on the shelf.
or I point to a bookshelf full of books and say, "Give me a book.", waving my finger only in the general direction of the top shelf.

"The" is specific,
"a" or "an" are not specific.
Does it make sense to you?
