Instead of italics, does this method work?

His 'a's look like '8's.

She had too many 'whereas'es, 'thus's, 'wheretofore's and 'maybe's in her essay.

I'm told this is technically correct - just confirming.

His 'a's look like '8's.I find it rather confusing. "His a's look like 8's" is more easily understood without the quotation marks around the a and 8.

She had too many 'whereas'es, 'thus's, 'wheretofore's and 'maybe's in her essay.

I'm told this is technically correct - just confirming. I don't think so. Omit the apostrophes and add es to thus.
