how to write a lettre to DVLA to tell them that i sold my car

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Good afternoon.

(1) I don't think you have to write a letter.

(2) I think the Department of Motor Vehicles has forms for you to fill out.

(a) Probably (I think) the Department prefers that you fill out a form. It is more official that way.

(3) I don't know where you live. In some states, you must report the sale in 5 days.
(4) You can get the form:

a) on line.

b) call the DMV and they will mail one to you.

c) go to a local DMV office and get a form???

(5) It is REALLY important to make sure the DMV knows that you sold your car so that you are no longer legally responsible.

Good luck!

At the bottom of the official owner's registration form which you should have had, is a tear-off slip which you should have kept when you sold the car. You complete the information of the new owner and you send that to DVLA yourself. This is a safeguard in case the new owner doesn't register the car.

If you handed the entire registration document to the new owner, I would recommend telephoning DVLA as soon as possible to tell them about your mistake and they will tell you what to do.

If the new owner doesn't register the car, and any speeding tickets or parking fines are given on the car, they will automatically come to you as you are the last registered keeper.

Sort this out quickly to avoid problems.
