Could you please tell what is the meaning of the sentence below and also explain a little bit grammar of the sentence?

"Life is of no value but as it brings us gratifications."
"Life is of no value except as far as it brings us gratifications."
" ... except insofar as it ..."
"Life is of no value except to the extent that it brings us gratifications."


I guess It is something like:

"Life has no value if it does not bring us gratifications."
Not exactly. It's not really a conditional. But you could infer the truth of your statement from it.
