Can one say:
I like him playing midfield.
instead of:
I like him WHEN he plays midfield.

Yes, but it could be confusing. If the context (football/soccer) is understood then it might be fine as it is, IMO.

I agree with Red. As long as the meaning is clear, that structure is fine.
