Could one use:
1-Your novel is like Auster's.
instead of
2-Your novel is like Auster's novels?

Could one use:
3-Jake's essays are like Pete's.
instead of:
4-Jake's essays are like Pete's essay.

Gratefully,
Navi.

We generally assume that we are comparing similar things, i.e. a singular with a singular, a plural with a plural:
1-Your novel is like Auster's (novel).
3-Jake's essays are like Pete's (essays).

If one book is like all of an author's work, you write like Auster might work.
