Dear teachers,
Could you tell me whether this sentence is correct?

They weren't very much liked in their motherland.

Can I write just 'They weren't very much liked at home.' and this will mean the same?

Which do you advise me to use 'motherland' or 'fatherland' as a synonym of homeland?

I'll be really grateful for your kind help.

***NOT A TEACHER*** Yes, "They weren't very much liked at home" or "in their own country" would be fine. I think many Americans would be uncomfortable with terms like "motherland" and "fatherland." We do, however, use the term "homeland security."
