I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct. Is it correct not to use "who was" after "boyfriend", and use "a comma" instead?

Linda shouted herself hoarse while rooting for her boyfriend, running 800 meters in his first competitive race.

You used a comma, not "'a comma'". It doesn't work there.
