Quote from Wikiquote:
"After all human beings have to live dogs too so as not to know that time is passing, that is the whole business of living to go on so they will not know that time is passing, that is why they get drunk that is why they like to go to war, during a war there is the most complete absence of the sense that time is passing a year of war lasts so much longer than any other year."
What does "live dogs" mean here?

Thanks.

I can't even hazard a guess.

The entire quote is riddled with mistakes and makes little sense.

I have added the link to the original article.

'... human beings have to live like dogs to know that ...' would make that phrase a bit more comprehensible.

It doesn't mean anything. The whole point is that this is a discussion about whether the Wikipedia article is factual. Also, Gertrude Stein did not write sentences that were supposed to make a lot of sense, which is why this person is wondering whether she actually wrote this or not. The commenter says: "I just don't believe Stein could have written [it]."
So, before wondering what it means, you'd need to find out if that's what she wrote. Alternatively, you could read any private meaning into it.
