[Idiom] Looking for origin of idiom

Looking for the origin of "Live high off (or on) the hog". I think it started because the cuts of meat from higher on the hog's body were more expensive, so if you had that to eat it meant you were well off. My son does not want to take my word for it. Also, he thinks the teacher might want to know the geographical origin--anyone know this?

Pigs were kept by many people as they were so economical - they eat anything you offer, do not need a great deal of care and can grow to substantial sizes. I am not at all sure it has anything to do with the possible value of the meat. More likely it means you use the entire beast in one go, rather than preserving it and keeping it for use throughout the year.
