Dear friends and Teachers,

- What is the difference between "mechanic" and "machinist"?

Thanks a million!

I think it may be different in Am E, but in Br E a machinist uses light machinery (say - a sewing machine), whereas a mechanic services any kind of machinery (say - mending a car).

In AmE, a mechanic is a skilled person who repairs automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, etc.

A machinist is a professional who has undergone a training program and apprenticeship to use machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, and machining centers, to produce precision metal parts.
