Which is correct;

1) That is a bad movie, but John has made many good movies as well.

2) That is a bad movie, but John has made many other good movies as well.

I think '2' is self-contradictory and is technically incorrect, but people say things like that.
I might be wrong. I am not sure at all.

People say a lot of things that are ungrammatical and contradictory. Ideally, you should avoid doing so yourself. We know that the person means "John has made some bad movies but he has made other movies and those movies are good" but people don't talk like that in real life.

They do. The first is more accurate,the second doesn't sound that odd to me. People say things like this. It wouldn't work so well in formal contexts, especially written.
