I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Maria pressed her ear to the door the better to hear what her husband was saying on the telephone.

Add a comma after 'door'.

Instead of "the better to hear" you could use "to better hear". Yours is fine though.

Don't you say "press against the door"?
