I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct. "Ladder" is "run" in AmE.

Maria scaled the fence and got a ladder in her tights. It was the the only undamaged pair she had, and she trembled at the thought of her mother's anger.

I would use "they were" instead of "it was." Otherwise, okay.
