Generally, a boy's name. It's an alternative spelling of Martin. Though these days, names seem to be unisex quite often!

In the US these days it is often difficult to determine a person's gender from their written name. Very "trendy" parents have been giving their female babies traditionally male names for the last five years or more. Teachers reading their classroom attendance sheet on the first day of school have become accustomed to discovering that Elliott, Justyn, Owen and Martyn are female students.

They're also making up names quite a lot too, or coming up with unusual spellings of ordinary names.

Coincidentally, given the name in this thread, the usual female version of Martin is Martine, but I recently saw this spelt "Mahteen". I despair, sometimes. I'm rather in favour of the Swedish system where, I believe, when you go to register a child's name, if they think it's ridiculous or made up, they simply refuse to register it!!! :)

But aren't her responses hysterical?

Hint: Any time you need to include how to pronounce the name in parentheses, it's a bad, bad name!
