Is it ok to say " Today is My friend's memorial day"? I mean to say today is the day he died many years ago. Is there another expression?

2006Is it ok to say " Today is My friend's memorial day"? I don't think people say that. I mean to say today is the day he died many years ago.
Is there another expression? You can say, 'My friend died on this day (12 years ago)(in 1996).'

You can also say.."today is my friend's death anniversary."

I just don't think the word "anniversary" is used for deaths.
