Here is the question.

(A)abundant - enthusiastic
(B)difficult - optimistic
(C)prosperous - pessimistic
(D)depressing - cheerful

The answer is (B).
But I think (D) can be an answer too.

If 'D' were a viable answer, fewer people would have made it through the Great Depression! In fact, it's being cheerful and optimistic about the future that buoys people through a depressed economy.
