Hello,

I run across the following sentence in a grammar book.

"We acquire much of knowledge through reading."

I don't understand why the sentence uses of between much and knowledge. When we use knowledge in a general sense, we say much knowledge. Am I mistaken?

Are you sure it doesn't say "We acquire much of our knowledge through reading." If it doesn't, it was probably meant to.

I think the author is trying to use an understood or implied 'our' there. It took me a couple of tries to figure it out, but it seems clear enough in hindsight.

However, I don't know that it works very well since I had to read it a few times to understand.

Although not a native English speaker, Cesur Öztürk is a distinguished linguist in English. I have the very old edition of the book. So there might be minor mistakes.
