Me gusta mucho la musica en espanol y escucho mucho a la radio. Pero muchas veces estoy confudido sobre las palabras en las canciones y tengo miedo de hablar sobre ellas con personas quien hablan espanol. Por eso, quiero hablar un rato sobre canciones en espanol aqui para ayudar mi entendimiento de algunas canciones.

Generalmente escucho a las estaciones de la radio "Pop" como Viva y Anda (estaciones en chicago, Illinois) y debajo son algunos canciones que tengo preguntas sobre.

"El Za Za Za...Mesa que mas aplauda"
I can't particuarly understand much about this song except that the title seems to mean "Table that is most applauded." One of my Spanish friends mentioned that it is meaningless even to Spanish people and I shouldn't pursuse translating it further. Are they right?

"Sabes el chocolate"
This song seems to be a love song between two people using some kind of analogy concerning chocolate. I think that is the only point of that song.

"Andar conmigo" by Julieta Venegas
Initially I thought that this was a simple song about some friends walking together. One person seemed concerned about the other person abandoning them and it seemed like a nice song about friendship, loyalty, and abandonment. When telling this translation to one of my Spanish friends, they laughed hysterically for a minute and managed to tell me that my translation was completely off and that this song was about a woman about to get married to someone and "Andar Conmigo" is similar to the "I do" lines involved with English weddings. I would appreciate knowing what the song is really about. Or perhaps it is open to interpretation?

"Me Duele" by Joe Lopez
This song is about someone who says that life hurts too much (la vida duele, duele demasiado aqui senti.) I gather that it is about a boy who lost his girlfriend and is feeling the hardness of life. My Spanish friends have no comment on the translation so I assume that it is correct.

"Tu promtete" by In-Grid
My Spanish friends hate this song and point out that I should not even attempt to translate it. According to them, it is in French! Why would a French song be broadcast reguarly on a Spanish radio station?

"Digame verdad" by Alejandro Guzman(?)
This song is about a woman asking that her lover tell the truth. She feels that he only tells her what she wants to hear and not the truth. She asks for the truth to be revealed instead of secrets concealed and lies spoken. My Spanish friends do not object to the translation, but they contest the name of the musician.

I'm sorry for spamming this forum with English descriptions of the songs, but I am having trouble reconciling what I think the song means and what the actual meaning is. I don't want to have a third level of confusion between what I wrote in Spanish, what the song meant in Spanish, and what I thought it meant. When explaining about the songs, please clarify in English since my Spanish is not that good. For general comments or responses to segments that I wrote in Spanish, feel free to reply en espanol.

Yo tengo problemas de entender que palabra dicen en la radio y sera mas facil si tengo las palabras de la cancion. Are you sure the title of this song is right ? For me, it doesn't make much sense. "Sabes a chocolate" (you taste of chocolate) might be the correct title, but I'm just guessing.

Again, your friend was right. I've read the lyrics and the song is about a woman who is about to (or wants to) get married.

It is in French. The actual title is "Tu Es Foutu". At least in Spain, it is quite normal to hear songs from Spain, USA, France ...

Actually in the US it is quite unusual to have a song played that is not the same language as the station plays. All Spanish music is played on Spanish-only stations and everything else is English-only. Some multicultural stations exist and play very obscure languages (such as news in Russian and then a talk-show in German).

"Tanto la quería" by Andy & Lucas
The title seems to translate to mean "so much I would want her." The song discusses "la reina" (the queen - which is the person's lover) and "por ella moria" (for her I might die) which implies that it is a simple love song with no other complications. My Spanish friends have no objections to my translation.

"Quiero que me quieres como soy" by Paulina Rubio
The title means "I want you to want me as I am" and that seems to summarize the complete song. I didn't have any trouble understanding most of this song, but the DJ's comments about it were bizarre. On several different occasions, he mentioned that "ella es la chica adorada" which translates to "she is the adored young girl." Is this phrase
used specifically to describe this singer or in general to describe a young female singer? I think that it is odd that I never hear this comment related to other singers on my Spanish station. Perhaps this means that the DJ has a crush on the singer or maybe there is some significance. My Spanish friends think that it is a specific description of the singer based on something they read a while back on radionotas.com, but they can't remember the URL.

This song's title means "I need you" and it seems to be a very common title for Spanish songs. I have heard at least three variants on this song and the version by "La Ley" (the law) seems to be the newest and most widely played.

"Minutos" and "Cierra Puertas y Ventanas" by Ricardo Arjona
These songs are interesting based on their slightly different slant. Minutos" (minutes) deals with someone sitting around waiting and watching time pass by. It was a very good song for time practice and almost worth storing for a Spanish class. (Provided there aren't some bad Spanish words that I missed.) The song "Cierra Puertas y Ventanas"(Close door and windows) discusses someone trying to convince their lover not to leave. As a result, he is asking someone or perhaps himself to close the doors and windows to give him time to convince her not to leave.

I agree definitely. It would be easier if you write the lyrics instead of just writing the title. You can easily find the "lyrics" ("letras" in Spanish) using google or something like this, in the Spanish version. For example,

It's logical. In Spain, we listen to all kind of music (mainly in Spanish and English). Of course, there are some radio stations that focus on some kind of music, but we don´t have English/French/German-only stations, at least as far as I know

"Todo mi amor" is the actual title of this song. The version I've listened to has no DJ but I guess that he is talking about Paulina Rubio.

I hadn't listened to "Minutos" before and I really like it. I agree with your interpretation. I haven't listened to the other song and I couldn't find the lyrics either.

He intentado escuchar la cadena Viva pero cuando se va a reproducir me da un error, asi que no he podido escuchar nada.
Respecto a kissfm, intenta escucharla en esta dirección http://www.kissfm.es/live.html, pulsa sobre "modem" (baja calidad) o "ADSL" (alta calidad) dependiendo de la velocidad de conexión que tengas. En esta cadena ponen todo tipo de música en inglés y en español. A mi me gusta bastante

hi! i´m from méxico that´s why i know the meaning of some of those songs (as you can see my english is horrible). anyway
1.- "za za za la mesa que más aplauda, le mando le mando le mando a la niña", here it means something like: the people in a table who is more enthusiastic and applauding(with the music) will win or have THE GIRL (in this case THE GIRL is synonym of a prostitute), so it´s not exactly a restaurant it´s a brothel.
O.K? believe it or not but that´s the meaning.
2.- Now "Dime si tu quisieras andar conmigo oh oh oh!" here exactly means: Do you want to be my boyfriend? (or girlfriend), because in méxico when you want to hang out with a person (specially when you´re young), you don´t have to say ...to be my boyfriend or girlfiend its just "andar conmigo".
i know that the music video shows a girl with a dress like if she were a bride, but it´s another way to say she´s desperate to fall in love.

1. Cuando me ha dado tu explicación a mis amigos, ellos dicen que están de acuerdo con tu interpretación. Mis amigos no quieren explicar canciones que veían como sucio. Y por eso, yo estaba confundido sobre que significa la canción "Mesa que mas aplauda." Pero ahora, sé que es una mala canción y entiendo porque.

2. Es interesante que "Andar Conmigo" es el mismo por muchachos e muchachas. Cuando personas solo están yendo a un lugar, que palabras usan para significar este? Dicen "me viene," "camina conmigo" "va conmigo," o usan otra palabra? (Translation: In general usage, how do you tell someone to "come walk with me" without the subtle romantic meaning?)

Tu ingles esta bien y puedo entender todo que ha escrito. Es posible que son errores pequeños (pero a mi no les molestan) y los otros miembros del esto foro puede ayudarle.

General Questions:
How do I get quotes into my response such as Masfer uses where it says "whoever said:" Figuring out how to do that would really save me time in writing my responses. If I click reply to someone's message, I get all of the text in a large chunk instead of little potions. If I try adding my comments into the existing quote, my comments are also quoted. I think that I am missing something subtle with this forum software.

My Spanish spellchecker complains about the use of "y" instead of "e" when I write:
" Alguien puede mirar y explicar las problemas...." The spellchecker insists that an "e" should be between mirar and explicar instead of a "y." What does a standalone "e" mean in Spanish? I thought that "y" was used to combine phrases in the same way that "and" is used in English.

How do I get quotes into my response such as Masfer uses where it says "whoever said:" Figuring out how to do that would really save me time in writing my responses. If I click reply to someone's message, I get all of the text in a large chunk instead of little potions. If I try adding my comments into the existing quote, my comments are also quoted. I think that I am missing something subtle with this forum software.

It is very simple. You just have to press the "Quote" button. It is above the text box where you write. You also have the "Bold", "italics" ... buttons. You have to click twice in order to use these bottons (one to select the initial part of the text and the other one to select the ending). For example, if you want to quote something, you should have something like this:

[ quote ] Your text here [ /quote ]

But no spaces are left between quote, /quote and the square brackets (I wrote them just to show you) If you select the text and click once on the buttons, the "marks" will be automatically placed at the beggining and at the end of the text. This makes things easier.

My Spanish spellchecker complains about the use of "y" instead of "e" when I write:
" Alguien puede mirar y explicar los problemas...." The spellchecker insists that an "e" should be between mirar and explicar instead of a "y." What does a standalone "e" mean in Spanish? I thought that "y" was used to combine phrases in the same way that "and" is used in English.

I'm afraid your Spanish spellchecker is wrong, you have to write y in that example. e doesn't mean anything in Spanish, apart from that this is the name of this letter. Y is used exactly as and in English, but you have to write e instead of y when the second word begins with i in order to avoid "bad sounds". For example,

Dinamarca e Italia jugarán la final. NOT Dinamarca y Italia ...
Pedro e Irene se van a casar. NOT Pedro y Irene ...

"Huir" doesn't mean "correr". As you pointed out, it is like "to flee". When you use "huir", una persona normalmente huye de algo(something)/alguien(somebody).

When no subject is written (this is called implicit/elliptical subject), you should try to "guess" who is the subject because of the context. In this example, the singer is talking about himself all the time, so I assume that he is still the subject. Otherwise, he should have introduced the other subject in the song before.
When speaking, we usually say who we are talking about at the beginning of the conversation. After that, we usually leave out the subjects.

Here "hubiera" is an auxiliary verb (the main verb in "llevar") and is used to express that this action is not real. Don't worry if you don't know how to use these tenses because it is kind of difficult. Here I write an example using this tense:

Respecto a la segunda canción, no he encontrado ninguna que tenga esa frase. Yo cuando quiero encontrar el título de una canción lo que hago es buscar en www.google.es , así que no tengo ninguna página de letras preferida. Si no encuentras alguna letra, escribe en google o en cualquier otro buscador una frase que se diga en la canción. Por ejemplo:

En algunas partes de sudamérica usan "ustedes" en lugar de "vosotros" pero ahí ya no tiene el tono "formal". En cualquier caso, me puedes tutear (use "tú" instead of "usted") por que me resulta extraño que la gente me hable de usted. Además soy muy joven. :wink:

That's very interesting information. I think that it will be interesting for future reference if I look up where the other singers are from. A quick search yielded that Julieta Venegas (lento and andar conmigo) was born in "Tijuana, Baja California" which is actually part of Mexico despite the fact that the US also has a state named California.

Here I write an example using this tense:

Si hubiera sabido que tenías hambre, te hubiera traido comida.
If I had known that you were hungry, I would have brought food.

Is this an accurate usage example? (I wrote it myself.)
Si hubiera visto la lluvia, te hubiera montado en un autobus.

This confuses me. Your statements suggest that I used the "tú" form instead of the "Usted" form. In my Spanish class, they taught that the folowing subjects are used:
yo=I
tú=you (informal)
Usted=you (formal)
Ustedes=you all
Vosotros=not used except in Spain (I live closer to Mexico anyways)
The only verbs that I see is "puede" which is correctly conjugated unless gracias is a verb. In which case should I be saying:
"Mucha gracia a Usted por su ayuda y puede y puede corregir mis errores en español!"

Personally, I didn't like this song very much. It ranks as my least favorite of any of the songs that we have discussed except for "Mesa que mas apluada." There is way too much "Spanglish" not to mention that I don't think that I could have retreived more than 10% of these lyrics by listening to the song. In the other songs, I could hear most of the lyrics in the song, but they just went by too fast to write down. This song has very few understandable lyrics when played on the radio. Furthermore, this song seems pointless. I don't see any overall theme or purpose. For the most part it seems like senseless nonsense.

That's very interesting information. I think that it will be interesting for future reference if I look up where the other singers are from. A quick search yielded that Julieta Venegas (lento and andar conmigo) was born in "Tijuana, Baja California" which is actually part of Mexico despite the fact that the US also has a state named California.

It depends on the country. Most of the songs you've listened to are in "Español de América" (American Spanish). In Spain we speak "Castellano" (This is the correct term but usually we just say "español"). One could say that this is similar to BE and AE. We have Castellano (in Spain) and Español de América (in America) I think that the word "Español" comprises both terms. I hope it's not very confusing :wink:

This sentence is not bad, but you should have written:

Si hubieras visto la lluvia, te habrías montado en un autobús.

In the first sentence, we use the subjuntive because it is a unreal (or impossible) situation. In the second one, we use the conditional form.

This confuses me. Your statements suggest that I used the "tú" form instead of the "Usted" form.

I am from Spain, so I do use vosotros. We say:
yo = I
tú = you (informal)
Usted = you (formal)
Ustedes = you all (formal)
Vosotros = you all (informal)
For us, usted and ustedes are always used in a forma way.

The only verbs that I see is "puede" which is correctly conjugated unless gracias is a verb. In which case should I be saying:
"Mucha gracia a Usted por su ayuda y puede y puede corregir mis errores en español!"

This sentence is wrong. Gracias is not a verb. You can say "dar las gracias" or "agradecer". The first sentence you wrote was right.

Personally, I didn't like this song very much. It ranks as my least favorite of any of the songs that we have discussed except for "Mesa que mas apluada." There is way too much "Spanglish" not to mention that I don't think that I could have retreived more than 10% of these lyrics by listening to the song. In the other songs, I could hear most of the lyrics in the song, but they just went by too fast to write down. This song has very few understandable lyrics when played on the radio. Furthermore, this song seems pointless. I don't see any overall theme or purpose. For the most part it seems like senseless nonsense.

I do agree with you. This song is horrible. And yes, It is almost impossible to understand what they are "singing", so don't worry if you don't get the song because it is even difficult for me. Besides, the song makes no sense at all !

This article from 7/27/2004 titled "La Radio Suena al Son de Amores de Andy & Lucas" talks about the rising popularity of the song that I just translated. Currently it is the 19th most popular and "Tanto la quería" is 15th in popularity. In my area, I rarely hear "Son de amores" but "Tanto la quería" is played almost hourly.

Previously, we reached the conclusion that the overall message of "Tanto la quería" was "a simple love song." However, I don't see a clear message in "Son de amores." Here are the points that confuse me:

- Who is the niño supposed to represent? Is this the woman's child? Is it her desire to have a child? If the niño is her child, then why didn't they use hijo? Note these lines:
"Comentan que tu niño a ti te ha dejado"
"Deja de llorar y piensa que algun día un niño te dará"
It sounds like the boy left (ha dejado). Yet the singer assures the woman that some day a boy will be given to you. Is it the same boy? Who is this niño?

-I still don't get why the woman is being called "loca." The best support that I have seen is this:
"pero me han comentado que te han visto sola
llorando por las calles en altas horas
ay como las locas, locas, locas."
However, I don't think that wandering around at night alone qualifies as being crazy. Some people like to get fresh air at night. If Andy y Lucas are from Spain then I assume that they are familiar with siestas. Therefore people would be much more likely to wander around at night since they are well rested from their siesta. I suppose that the loca trait could be blamed on the "sola" part. If so, then Spanish women may be ticked off by this song and therefore lowering its appeal. "Tanto la quería" seems to have fans of both men and women in my area. I haven't heard almost anyone request to hear "Son de amores," but they constantly ask for "Tanto la quería." So why is the woman called "loca?"

-What is the singer's motivation? Is he just trying to comfort some random woman walking in the street? Do they already know each other? Personally I don't think that the song gives us any information whatsoever about the singer. It somewhat weakens the personal connection to people compared with "Tanto la quería." In that song, the singer constantly sang about his feelings. In this song almost the entire focus is on the despondant woman.

A few days ago I had some spare time and I wrote an e-mail in Spanish to David Miranda who is the DJ for Viva during the daytime. There was a brief comment about my page long e-mail on the radio. David Miranda habló "he recibido un correo electronico que es incredible...." The rest of the comment dealt with ways to communicate with Viva. I heard shuffling of paper which implies to me that they actually printed my e-mail. Hopefully they didn't try printing this thread out. It is currently more than 20 pages! In Spain, when we speak about American Spanish we usually refer to Latin America (which comprises all the American countries that speak Spanish, as an official language) Since you are so close to these countries, I guess you learn American Spanish, which only differs from Castellano (spoken in Spain) very little.

- Who is the niño supposed to represent? Is this the woman's child? Is it her desire to have a child? If the niño is her child, then why didn't they use hijo? Note these lines:

I suppose that the loca trait could be blamed on the "sola" part. If so, then Spanish women may be ticked off by this song and therefore lowering its appeal. "Tanto la quería" seems to have fans of both men and women in my area. I haven't heard almost anyone request to hear "Son de amores," but they constantly ask for "Tanto la quería." So why is the woman called "loca?"

This song is not ticking off Spanish women. They are just singing about a girl who has just been left by her boyfriend. Because of this, she is crying alone at night, but this is just a special/temporal situation until she finds another boyfriend. No hidden meaning in this song (at least I find none)

-What is the singer's motivation? Is he just trying to comfort some random woman walking in the street? Do they already know each other? Personally I don't think that the song gives us any information whatsoever about the singer. It somewhat weakens the personal connection to people compared with "Tanto la quería." In that song, the singer constantly sang about his feelings. In this song almost the entire focus is on the despondant woman.

I guess the singer knows the woman but it is not said in the song. The singer wants to cheer her up and tell her that she can carry on without him.

Well, I am only moving to another spot in Illinois. The move went well but my computer was packed up in boxes for a while. I also got a new Internet Service Provider (ISP) who gives me much faster internet access (broadband).

I will try to explain the "small" differences between these verbs:
Asustarse: to be afraid/to be frightened
Asustar: to frighten/to scare
Dar miedo: to frighten/to scare
Tener miedo: to be afraid/to be frightened

Some examples (subject is in bold letters):

I am afraid of cats:
Asustarse -----> (Yo) me asusto de los gatos
Tener miedo --> (Yo) tengo miedo a los gatos

Cats scares me:
Asustar -----> Los gatos me asustan.
Dar miedo --> Los gatos me dan miedo.

So we could say that asustar and dar miedo are synonymous, and so are asustarse and tener miedo.

I am glad everything went well. My ISP sucks but we don't have a better choice. I pay 45€ for a 256/128 connection (ridiculous!!!). In Spanish, we don't use my/your/his... (possessive pronoums) as often as you do in English. If you say "Mi estación de radio" I may think that you are the owner of the station or that you work there. Another example: I broke my leg: me rompí la pierna (not "me rompí mi pierna)

* Is Ingles missing an accent:?: Sí, inglés lleva acento. Si no pones acento, ingle significa groin, so you'd better write the accent. Tambien recuerda que lleva acento las siguientes palabras:

I think that the biggest translation error that I made was right here. I confused morir with matar. For the entire song I translated "me murio" as "me mato." Now I should have this down correctly:
morir=to die
matar=to kill

mas (without accent) means but (this is rarely used in literature/music, never in spoken Spanish) más (with accent) means more: this is the most common use.
