Is it a mistake not to capitalise the name of the seasons?

As a Brit, but not a teacher, I would reference the Oxford English Dictioary entry, which identifies summer without a capital letter, as follows:

http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/summer

summer

noun the season after spring and before autumn, when the weather is warmest.
verb spend the summer in a particular place.
— DERIVATIVES summery adjective. — ORIGIN Old English.

If it's good enough for Oxford, it's good enough for me!

Most style guides will tell you to NOT capitalize.
