Hi,

Could anyone tell me what the underlined phrase mean?

"The practice of 'objective' newspaper reporting is a means to promote new definitions of the public interest.

Thank you very much.

Public interest means that certain things are allowed because they affect the general public, which would not be allowed otherwise. It is, for instance, permissible to make more comments on the lives of political figures than private citizens because their actions affect us all. New definitions would involve, I assume, extending this idea.
