It's not a common phrase, they just used it for its literal meaning for the title of the book and movie.

The title relates to the Sheriff, who is about to retire. Even though he loves his job and doesn't really know what he'll do with himself after he retires, the last crime he works on is so horrific, it's almost beyond his comprehension. That's why he decides it is time to retire, because he feels too old to deal with the extreme type of violence in the world today. "This is no country for an old man." He originally meant this is no job for an old man, but by the end of the story, he is feeling that he is completely out of step with the entire country.

hi,
your explanation is great.
i watched this movie but wasn't able to understand many dialogues because of their Texan accent.
thanks a lot,
jc

Me, too, and English is my first language! I had to turn on the closed-caption subtitles in order to "read" what was being said.

Hi, just a line to say that it is always a relief to know that, from time to time, you also have difficulties in understanding accents.
