Hi there,

When we are sick, we will cough most of the time. What is the word to describe the thing that come from our mouths when coughing. What is the word to describe the thing which is sticky and full of germs? (usual term and formal term)

How could I make the following sentences sound more natural?

I felt really sick this week because I had flu. I coughed but I could cough out the thing which makes my throat very itchy. I couldn't sleep becasue everything when I slept I would cough most of the time. I then saw my naturalpath and took some herbs. It turns better now. I could cough the thing which is sticky and yellow. Yeeky!.

Thanks

"cough up" is the usual collocation.

Otherwise it is fine.
