Now the same technology is allowing genetic engineers to assemble made-to-order viruses, which are essentially genes wrapped in a shell
Why does a noun go with and adverb here?

It is the phrase "genes wrapped in a shell" that is linked to essentially [=relating to the most important characteristics or ideas of something]
