On his retirement day, David got a gold watch from his company as a token of appreciation.

Consider using "received" instead of "got" in that sentence.

I'd probably remove "day". Admittedly, that takes away the idea that he received the watch on the same day he retired, but it retains the idea that the watch was his retirement present from his company.
