I disagree with the posted definition. It means instead, truthful, honest, and straigtforward. It does not mean optimistic or happy.

Where did you see that definition? I found this one, it agrees with your opinion. I am not familiar myself with the idiom.


Open and honest, as in Dad has always been on the up-and-up with them. The precise allusion in this term is unknown. [Colloquial; c. 1860]
