Would you use "on" or "in" in this sentence?

We spent a semester there, attended various English classes and took exams on/in those classes.

"On" sounds better to me, but I think both might be correct.

Prepositions do change depending on where you live.

In the US, you'd say you have an exam ON a subject, but IN a class.

I have a test in my history class. It will be on the Industrial Revolution.
