I may have replied your question sooner, however I was looking forward to the result of the football final to share you our joy and happiness. What a pity that we didn't win the game although we all tried our best :wink: . We had a sad day but not disappointed. I want to master the problems, please explain me some following points:
1. The difference between "may have done" and " would have done". In that sentence, I want to say that I should reply soon, but I did not. If so, am I right?
2. Try one's best and do one's best. In such case, why can't we use the exp " try one's best"?
3." Best" is a superior comparison of " good", whether we need the adverb " very" here?
4. If you wait sth with full of hopeful, which word to express this feeling?
5. The sentence " We have a sad day but not disappointed" is not good because I wrote according to my Vietnamese thought . I mean that our players played very well, but we are unlucky ( for example). So we feel sad about the result, but not disapointed about the game...Can you help me saying this more naturally?..Surely, your writting is better than mine. It's why I need your help.

If you say "may have done" that indicates to me that it was a possibility. If you way "would have done" that tells me that was your intention. "I should reply soon" is about the future. "I should have replied sooner" would be about what you had planned to do previously (in the past).

You can. It is quite common, unfortunately. It's not logical, but it's common. (The effort is implicit in the expression "Do your best".)

I would say that it is not needed, but it is used sometimes when someone wants to say that someone is putting forth his best effort.

If a person is full of hope you would say he is hopeful.

I would say that if you wanted your team to win but they didn't then you were indeed disappointed. That is the meaning of disappointed. Perhaps you were unhappy about the result of the game but you still enjoyed the game itself.

You can say that the person waits hopefully, but that usage has rather fallen by the wayside, so youmight achieve the same result with a different word like expectantly.;-)

Which words are you confused about--"hopeful" and "hopefully"? I would say that if a person is hopeful about something that he is expecting good things to happen. I would say that they are both about a person's attitude, but one is an adjective and the other is an adverb, so they are used differently.
