Are these sentences correct?

Online social networking sites are a way of forming community, but a community that exists online rather than exist in physical space.
Online social networking sites are a way of forming community, but a community that exists online rather than existing in physical space.

You meant like "than" in comparative form we are not allowed to repeat the verb after "rather than".

Is the following is wrong too?

He writes at a table
rather than writing at a desk.
