I thought the poster was asking about the unknowable. It is impossible to know, for example, when the first verb was uttered. However, the first sytematic study of grammar would almost certainly discuss the parts of speech.

That's how I understood it, in which case we'd have to go back to the ancient Greek, Sanskrit, Chinese and other scholars. ;-)
