Hi,

Let's say you ask a student about the meaning of the word "otherwise" in (1).

(1) A conditional sentence is false if the antecedent is true and the consequent is false; otherwise it is true.
(2) except if (or when) the antecedent is true and the consequent is false.

If the student says it is (2), do you agree?

Thank you in advance

It seems that (2) also works as a paraphrase. Please tell us if so.

Sorry for the typo in my previous post. I was sleepy.

Let me rephrase the question.

(1) A conditional sentence is false if the antecedent is true and the consequent is false; otherwise it is true.
(2) P=the antecedent, Q=the consequent
Conditional sentence=If P, Q.
(i) P=true, Q=true; If P, Q.=true
(ii) P=true, Q=false; If P, Q.=false
(iii) P=false, Q=true; If P, Q.=true
(iv) P=false, Q=false; If P, Q. =true
(3) except if (or when) the antecedent is true and the consequent is false

Given (2), the word "otherwise" in (1) should mean (3).

Now do you agree?
