It depends on what part of the day you are referring to: the part that's over or the part that hasn't happened yet:


1. The class was given earlier today. (Past)
2. The class will be given later today. (Future)

Also, use the Present to express a fact, like this,

3. The class is given every Tuesday.

Use is given and was given and will be given in the passive voice; that is, when you want to make the object of the verb more important than the subject, switch them and add a passive verb, like this,
