I am wondering if my sentence make sense in English. Would you please correct my mistakes?

Peter felt terrible at work but hid behind the mask of cheerfulness to avoid any discussion about the state of his mind

I'd say 'a mask' and end the sentence with a punctuation mark.

I'd end with "his state of mind."
