My concern is about the comma. If it's Peter who is saying all this, drop the comma. The present perfect is correct if Peter is still in (or has just retired from) academia.

I find this sentence a bit awkward. I might rephrase it like this.

Peter describes himself as being good at conceptualisation but bad at implementation. This is probably due to his years spent in academia.

"Peter claims to be good at ...". That removes any ambiguity over who he is talking about.
