Peter told his friends to watch him

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

Peter told his friends to watch him make a perfect jump, and then he bellyflopped into the river. When he swam back to the river bank everyone was laughing at him and pointing their fingers at the red blotches on his stomach.

If Peter's friends were pointing at his stomach, he must have been doing the backstroke.

If he was on the river bank after he swam to it, he was probably standing up. I pictured him standing on the bank when his friends started pointing at his stomach.

That's what I thought when I wrote "...he swam to the river bank." I believed I didn't need to write that he was standing up.

I agree with you. Of course, it is possible that he swam to the bank but stayed in the water but I automatically read it to mean that he swam to the bank in order to get out of the water.

Peter neglected the critical first step of the debacle: asking one of his friends to hold his beer.

I don't think you do- the idea seems clear enough to me.
