I believe my sentences do not sound natural, but I hope someone can help me to make them sound meaningful. Is it correct to say "identity lies in"?

Peter's identity lies in his job. He is afraid if he ever loses it, he will be adrift. without a sense of belonging and a goal.

He [STRIKE]is afraid[/STRIKE] worries that if he ever loses that job, [STRIKE]it,[/STRIKE] he will be adrift, without a sense of belonging [STRIKE]and[/STRIKE] or a goal in life.
Try that.
The first sentence reads okay to me.
