I've come accross terminology such as two part and three part phrasal verbs. How do they differ from a normal phrasal verb?

Any help appreciated.

to look up (2 parts: verb plus particle 'up')

She looked up his number in the phonebook.

to catch up with (3 parts: verb plus particles 'up' and 'with')

I try to catch up with my friends whenever I have the time.

When you want to catch up with your friends you look them up then you call them up.
