Within a sentence words are divided into two basic categories: 1) their name (FORM) and what they do (FUNCTION).

1. All living things need water.

FORM
All (adjective)
living (participle adjective)
things (plural noun)
need (present tense verb)
water (non-count noun)

FUNCTION
All living things (subject)
need (main verb)
water (object)

All (modifies the noun phrase 'living things')
living (modifies the plural noun 'things')


2. People and animals need water to drink.
