Is this "of" necessary here or redundant? Does it mean "from"?

As a BE speaker, I consider of to be redundant after off.

And here's an extract from Grammar Girl Presents the Ultimate Writing Guide for Students written by a speaker of American English who considers 'of' after 'off' to be superfluous as well:

OF: LEAVE OF OFF
You may be shocked, but it's true that you don't need of to follow off. The of is unnecessary fluff.

Get your feet off of the couch.
(You don't need to listen because it's incorrect.)

Get your feet off the couch.
(I would get those feet off - now!)
