In certain circumstances they could be used interchangeably for the same object. In other circumstances a couple of them might be appropriate but not others. It would depend on the exact piece of equipment you are speaking about.

What kind of device do you have in mind? A microscope, for instance, could be an instrument, a device, or a piece of equipment.
