Please take a look at this sentence

I am translating from Danish to English and I am having a hard time getting the English as close to the Danish as I can. So I have translated these two sentences, but I am not sure that these sentences make sense in English (that you can say this in English)

So what do you think of this?

Strangely enough I did not envy my brother. I took it for grand that I would go to the university, and first after some years I realized that the situation had changed radically.

I took it for granted [or "as a given"] that I would go to the university - is it already clear which university you mean? Otherwise, just say "go to college/university" without the "the."

and first after some years - This part isn't clear. Could you mean "but eventually, after some years," ?
