Feather and Pleather: Britney Spears shows off the good girl and bad girl sides of her personality at the American Music Awards … and it turns out neither has a strong sense of style. On the red carpet, the pop tartlet fails to shine in a diamond-patterned, feather-bottomed Roberto Cavalli number that has her imitating -- consciously or not -- Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey, both of whom have worn the designer's pluck-y gowns. For the show, Britney is a disaster in duds apparently derived from the Gap's teen fetish line, modeling pleather thigh highs and matching bikini bottoms with a hot purple corset. As if that wasn't enough to earn the "In the Zone" warbler a major fashion foul, she also sports that most evil of all sartorial selections: the dreaded and despised turtleneck shrug. Look away, people! Look away!

Fashion has a language all its own. When the writer says "On the red carpet, the pop tartlet fails to shine in a diamond-patterned, feather-bottomed Roberto Cavalli number" what she means by "number" is the dress Britney is wearing. (You can tell that from the context.) A "pluck-y gown" is either one that is daring or it has feathers in it. As for "pleather", that is either a misprint or perhaps it is leather with feathers. For "In the Zone" warbler" the reviewer borrowed a sports term. Somebody who is "in the zone" is highly focused and doing very well at what it is he does. A "warbler" is a bird, that is, a singer. When somebody "sports" something she wears it, presumably for all of us to see.
