Present participles can be used as premodifying adjectives-- 'the galloping horse suddenly swerved'-- or as postmodifiers-- 'The man standing on the corner is a police officer'. Some can only post-modify: X 'the reading man is a professor'; this should be recast as 'the man reading is a professor'.
