" Obviously, George W. Bush's agenda is not primed for his ultimate world statesmanship.

" He's waited until you are primed "

" The seller is primed "

This word ' primed ' sounds so vague to me because the meanings I got from the dictionaries don't look fit with the sentences above.

Any comments ?

To be "primed" means to be ready or prepared.

" Obviously, George W. Bush's agenda is not readyfor his ultimate world statesmanship.

" He's waited until you are ready"

" The seller is ready"

Shouldn't "He's waited" be "He's waiting"? :?:

I think 'primed' is more specific- Mr Bush would be primed for a specific meeting by his advisors. ;-)

You can prime a pump, but can you prme a person?

I would expect Mr. Bush's advisors to "prep" him for that meeting.

I haven't heard 'prep' used here. Maybe I should change the name to a British politican. ;-)

I agree with Casiopea that "ready" is a part of these uses of primed, but there is also a component of preparation involved. It has the sense of "having been made ready" or "having been prepared".

You have to be prepared to be ready, don't you?

  • "Be prepared."

There are several definitions of ready which are light on the preparation side.

read·y (rĕd'ē)
adj., -i·er, -i·est.

Prepared or available for service, action, or progress: I am ready to work. The soup will be ready in a minute. The pupils are ready to learn to read.
Mentally disposed; willing: He was ready to believe her.
Likely or about to do something: She is ready to retire.
Prompt in apprehending or reacting: a ready intelligence; a ready response.
Available: ready money.
tr.v., read·ied, read·y·ing, read·ies.
To cause to be ready.

ready

I think any kind of readiness implies preparation. Certainly, someone who is ill-prepared is not ready. Possibly in some cases it has more to do with alertness than with preparation for a particular activity. In such a case a person might be said to be "ready for anything". If I am "ready, willing, and able" then I am prepared for whatever might come my way. Of course, the definitions of "ready" that don't have to do with people do not apply.

(Readiness in the case of the military means that they are prepared for combat.)
